The Mount Rainier Police Review and Advisory Board was created by the City of Mount Rainier Mayor and City Council in 2022 by city ordinance. Recognizing that the nation is in a period of heightened reckoning with a history of oppression of people of color and other minorities and disadvantaged persons, this board was created to help ensure that all members of the public are treated fairly, courteously, and with respect by its law enforcement officers to the maximum extent practical consistent with the pursuit of the police department mission of law enforcement.
The Mayor and City Council have deemed it necessary to create and maintain a Police Review and Advisory Board to allow for citizen participation in the review of the City's police department policies and operations with respect to its treatment of members of the public. This board was created in furtherance of the city's goal to provide assurance that allegations of abuse and misconduct will be handled in a thorough and serious manner. Further, the Board reviews the budget of the police department, conducts community outreach to encourage residents to give feedback on our city's police department, and fields complaints. Citizens are encouraged to contact the police department directly, but the Board serves as an additional body to receive complaints. The Board meets with the Mayor and City Council, Chief of Police, police officers, and city staff as necessary. This board is an independent body that answers to the Mayor and City Council.
The City Council adopted Ordinance 05-2022 (PDF) on June 21, 2022, creating a Police Review and Advisory Board.
