Stop Sign Monitoring System

Mount Rainier News Posted on July 09, 2024

As the City continues to enhance road safety and achieve zero deaths and injuries on our roadways, the Mayor and Council passed Ordinance 04-2024 amending the City’s Code to allow stop sign monitoring systems in the City.  The amendment follows the Maryland Legislature passage of HB364, which permits stop sign monitoring systems within school zones in Prince George’s County starting after July 1, 2024.

While the ordinance grants the City permission to use these systems, implementation will require a separate process and approval from the County Council. The ordinance also includes penalties for failing to stop at a stop sign as detected by the stop sign monitoring system once implemented.
