Mount Rainier, MD - The City of Mount Rainier’s Department of Economic Development is excited to announce the start of the 34th Street Façade Improvement Project – Phase 1. This initiative aims to enhance the exteriors of nine storefront businesses in the downtown area to boost the local economy. The project is funded through a Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) grant as part of Governor Wes Moore’s community development initiatives.

Usource Construction has been awarded the contract through a competitive RFP process. Businesses located in some of the city's oldest buildings dating back to 1910, which include storefronts on 4000 - 4010 34th Street, will benefit from a range of improvements.  Planned enhancements include:

  • Upgrading exterior finishes and materials
  • Repairing persistent exterior damage (e.g., water damage, rotting wood)
  • Installing new awnings and LED lights

Phase 1 of the 34th Street Façade Improvement Project is underway and estimated to be completed by the end of the year.

"The 34th Street Façade Improvement Project is a significant step forward in our ongoing efforts to revitalize Mount Rainier's downtown area. By enhancing the exteriors of older buildings, we not only preserve our rich architectural heritage but also boost economic growth in Mount Rainier and create a more welcoming and attractive environment for businesses, visitors, and residents alike," said Mayor Celina Benitez.

Director of Economic Development Ronald Hopkins added, "This project represents our continued investment in our local businesses. We’re confident these changes will attract more customers to the area, increase business profitability, and stimulate economic activity throughout the City.”
