Community Garden Resized Community Garden New Ramp

The construction of an accessibility ramp at the Mount Rainier Community Garden has been successfully completed. The milestone was celebrated during a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on Monday, November 18th, marking the successful completion of the project funded by Pepco and Sustainable Maryland through their Sustainable Communities Grant Program.

Led by Mayor Celina Benitez and Councilmember Valerie Woodall, the ceremony was attended by Sustainable Maryland’s Director, Mike Hunninghake, City Manager Kourosh Kamali, Councilmember Danielle Carter, City Staff, and Community Garden Member, Dorissa Griffin.

Pepco's Sustainable Communities Grant program is a program supporting open space and resiliency projects, and the City of Mount Rainier was awarded $10,000 as one of the 11 recipients of the program. This allocation was directed towards the construction of the newly completed accessible ramp and the upgrade of the community tool shed at the Community Garden.

Councilmember Woodall took the lead role in securing the grant, working collaboratively with members of the Community Garden, the Mount Rainier Green Team, and the City’s grant writer.

The Mount Rainier Community Garden is a community-led initiative that promotes and educates community members on gardening and planting.
