Youth volunteers help sort and pack holiday food baskets
City of Mount Rainier, MD - The City of Mount Rainier will be distributing 600 Holiday Baskets to its local schools and community members in need on December 16 at the Mount Rainier Police Department. Mayor and Council have approved the allocation of funding from the American Rescue Plan Act to the City’s distribution programs to provide residents with meals to share during the holiday season.
An estimated 7.6% of 8149 people live in poverty in Mount Rainier. As rising food prices make it more difficult for some community members to make ends meet, Mount Rainier residents are grateful to receive a food basket.
“Many of our community members find themselves in tough spots during these challenging times, but they find hope knowing help is available no matter how small they are, through these distribution programs, the generosity of our community, and their willingness to assist,” Mayor Celina Benitez said.
Volunteers, including youths from the Police Explorers 1910 and Roots and Shoot, helped sort and pack bags since Tuesday, December 13. More volunteers are expected to help during distribution day.
The baskets will contain Turkey or Ham, frozen vegetables, pie, rice, flour, and other non-perishable items.
