Mayor Benitez issues message to Mount Rainier community members addressing mail delivery delays

News Archive Posted on January 15, 2022

Message from the Mayor:

I want to thank everyone who answered the call to send me emails last week regarding the issues surrounding mail delivery by the United States Postal Service (USPS) in various locations throughout the city.

I have been communicating daily, even on multiple calls each day with the offices of US Senator Ben Cardin and Congressman Anthony Brown to discuss and address this matter. I am also in close communication with USPS to find solutions to the ongoing mail delay issue. Our teams are working hard at addressing the situation.

As many of our residents are aware, the mail delivered to our city and the carriers are not dispatched from the Mount Rainier postal office but from the USPS Calvert Carrier Annex Post Office in Hyattsville. Within the last 3 days, I received updates from some of our residents who have started receiving mail. Rainier Manor has also reported they have started to consistently receive mail this week. But there are still members of the community that are waiting for backdated mail and have been severely impacted by the lack of mail being delivered.

In order to continue keeping track, advocate and locate areas in the city that are affected by this poor service, I request members of the community to continue to email me at MayorBenitez@mountrainiermd.org with your name, address, and details of the mail issues (i.e., last time you have received your mail, is USPS “Informed Delivery” mail not delivered, urgent medication delays etc.).

I will continue to monitor this situation and communicate with the offices of Senator Ben Cardin, Rep. Brown and USPS. I will provide an update as soon as I have them.

Thank you.

Mayor Celina Benitez
