Free Trees for Mount Rainier Residents

News Archive Posted on August 28, 2023

The City of Mount Rainier awarded funding to Casey Trees from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) to help build climate resilience by planting trees. Through this opportunity a limited number of trees for Mount Rainier residents are available.

Who can participate? Any resident within Mount Rainier is eligible. The resident must commit to care for the tree by watering it regularly for several years. The City is particularly interested in working in areas of the City that have a lower tree canopy, so please help us spread the word.

How does the program work? The program offers both a free tree planting consultation and free native canopy tree(s) installed in your yard or in public space, such as the tree box in front of your residence, school grounds or parks.

For private property (yard trees), Casey Trees will schedule a consultation to discuss the appropriate location and tree species and plant the tree for you during the Fall 2023 or Spring 2024. For public property trees (e.g. tree box street trees), a Tree Commissioner will evaluate the space and make species recommendations for you. The tree will be planted by Casey Trees. This is a first come first serve opportunity for Mount Rainier residents.

What kind of trees are available? The trees will be a minimum of 1-1 ½ inch trunk diameter or 5-7 feet tall. Planted trees will include a bed of mulch and a protective deer guard.

The Mount Rainier Climate Resilient Tree Planting offers a palette of native canopy trees and a few smaller ornamental trees. Fruit trees are not available. The exact list changes from season to season, subject to availability. The Urban Forester from Casey Trees or a Tree Commissioner will discuss the recommended tree options for your property.
