Project Progress Update: High-Visibility Crosswalks, ADA Ramps, and Speed Humps


The City of Mount Rainier’s High-Visibility Crosswalks, ADA Ramps, and Speed Humps Project is currently underway and being implemented by Grace Management & Construction. This project is one of ten initiatives included in the City’s Vision Zero Action Plan, part of the Safe Streets and Roads for All Initiative, which is focused on enhancing pedestrian safety and introducing traffic-calming infrastructure throughout the city.

Project locations have been identified based on the City’s High Injury Network, as outlined in the Vision Zero Action Plan. The action plan was developed through a comprehensive data analysis process and extensive community input.

Current Work Areas

1. ADA Curb Ramp Installations

Ongoing Construction:

  • 30th Street & Upshur Street
  • 30th Street & Mount Rainier Park Entrance
  • 30th Street & Taylor Street

Scheduled to Begin July 21, 2025 (Weather Permitting):

  • 30th Street & Shepherd Street
  • 30th Street & Bunker Hill Road
  • Bunker Hill Road at 31st, 32nd, 33rd, and 37th Streets, and Queenstown Drive
  • 32nd Street & Shepherd Street

2. Crosswalk Striping

Crosswalk striping is scheduled to begin on July 21, 2025, weather permitting, following the curing period for the newly installed ADA ramps. Striping will proceed in the same sequence as the ramp installations to minimize disruptions.

3. Speed Hump Installations

Speed hump installation is scheduled to begin during the week of August 5, 2025, weather permitting, at the following locations:

  • 3100 block of Taylor Street
  • 3100 block of Upshur Street
  • 4000 block of 30th Street
  • 4000 block of 36th Street
  • Vicinity of 4304/4309 Russell Avenue

Temporary Access and Parking Impacts

During construction, the following temporary restrictions will be in effect:

  • Intermittent sidewalk and roadway closures in active work zones
  • Temporary parking restrictions near construction sites
  • Pedestrian detours may be in place as needed

Residents and visitors are advised to observe all posted signage and traffic control notices.

Project Milestones – Completed Work

  • ADA curb ramps along Chillum Road and the 34th Street corridor have been completed.
