Project Update: Permeable Pavement Installation

The City's contractors are making strong progress on the Permeable Pavement Project, which began this week with the installation of new Flexi-Pave sidewalks at the following locations: - 37th Street (between Eastern Ave and Newton St)
- 29th Street (between Taylor St and Upshur St)
- Shepherd Street (between 31st St and 32nd St)
Funded by a $150,000 grant from the Prince George's County Department of the Environment’s Stormwater Stewardship Program and administered by the Chesapeake Bay Trust, the project aims to replace impervious sidewalks with permeable pavement to enhance stormwater management, improve water quality, and support the County’s Climate Action Plan goals. Whether you’re new to Mount Rainier, a local business owner, or a longtime resident, it’s important to understand the City’s Tree Protection Ordinance before trimming or removing trees. Key Things to Know: • A permit is required for removing or significantly pruning trees—this includes topping, pruning more than 25% of the canopy, or cutting roots over 1 inch. • Protected trees include all street trees and private trees with a circumference of 56.55 inches or more at chest height. • Unauthorized tree removal or pruning can result in fines of up to $1,000 per tree, plus additional penalties. To avoid violations, always request a Tree Assessment before trimming or cutting. Learn more.
