Mount Rainier Tree Commission Marks Arbor Day Celebration by Providing Free Trees to Residents

Mount Rainier News Posted on April 24, 2024

Mayor Celina Benitez issued a Proclamation declaring April 26, 2024, as Arbor Day in the City of Mount Rainier. Arbor Day, celebrated both nationally and globally, underscores the importance of preserving our trees and woodlands while promoting tree planting to reap their numerous benefits.

To mark this occasion, the Mount Rainier Tree Commission, in partnership with Joe’s GreenWorks Program, has unveiled a new initiative. This program offers free trees to residents, providing an opportunity to beautify our neighborhoods and foster a greener environment.

Who can participate? Any resident within Mount Rainier is eligible for a street tree or yard tree. The location must already have adequate space for planting a tree in the ground. The commission is interested in working in areas of the City that have a lower tree canopy.

How does the program work? The program offers both a free tree planting consultation and free native canopy tree(s) installed in your yard or in public space, such as the tree box in front of your residence, school grounds or parks. The program also provides support for watering for up to two years, if planted in public space.

What kind of trees are available? The trees will be on average 5-7 feet tall when planted and have a 1-1 ½ inch trunk diameter. Planted trees will include a bed of mulch and a protective deer guard.

The Mount Rainier Joe's GreenWorks Tree Planting offers a palette of native canopy trees and a few smaller ornamental trees. Fruit trees are not available. The exact list changes from season to season, subject to availability.
