The City of Mount Rainier announced this year’s Youth Scholarship Program benefitting student residents of the city.

Mayor Celina Benitez and Council members Jimmy Tarlau, Luke Chesek, and Jarrett Stoltzfus will award seven (7) $3,000.00 scholarships to graduating seniors or current college students who are continuing their education at a post-secondary institution including technical or vocational schools.

The scholarship program was first introduced in 2018 by Mayor Benitez while serving as a Council member. This year, Mayor and Council approved the increase of the grant funding from $1000 to $3000 utilizing funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

To be considered for the scholarship, the student must be a resident of Mount Rainier for at least one year, have a 2.5 GPA 3, must be entering or be enrolled in a post-secondary technical or vocational institution for higher learning in the United States, and must complete and submit a Youth Scholarship application form and other necessary requirements prior to May 20, 2022.

The application also requires the student to submit up to a 500-word essay answering one of the following questions:

  1. The City was awarded $5.4M in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) fund, if you were a Mayor or a Councilmember, how would you utilize this fund to empower the youth in our community?
  2. How can youth utilize Social Media as a tool to make an impact in our community and promote the City to draw more visitors?
  3. What slogan would you create for the City of Mount Rainier to promote the traits and cultures of the City? Explain why.

The Scholarship Committee will review all applications, interview finalists, and make final selections.
