---Interview with Judy Walsh-Mellett---

Q: How long have you had an active vegetable garden in Mount Rainier?

A: I started my garden in the Fall of 1987 just after moving in. I started two beds in preparation for the following Spring.

Q: Are there particular vegetables you would recommend beginning gardeners try growing first?

A: Green beans are generally great producers and tolerant of all kinds of conditions. I find lettuce to be a winner too and peppers because the latter seem not to be bothered by pests.

Q: What kinds of things have helped you learn to garden over the years? books? talking to other gardeners? trial and error?

A: All of the above. I have also taken workshops and classes that have been helpful. Practice and trying different tips can also be very helpful. Learning to know the difference between a change I can make to what I am doing that will improve the garden and things that 'just are' that I can’t really improve away.

Q: What challenges have you learned to overcome when growing vegetables?

A: Accepting that I can't control the weather!!! And learning what I can and can’t change in the garden. Learning how to improve soil and slowly building better soil over time have shifted many challenges.

Focusing on growing things in season, best planting dates, and learning which things grow best from direct seeding vs transplants has also helped with things that felt like challenges in the past.

Accepting that there will always be some mysterious challenges that I may never figure out!

Q: What's the minimum amount of time you think it takes to start and maintain a small vegetable garden?

A Hard to answer depending on what size "small" really is and how much of a perfectionist you are. I recommend a little time every day or on a very regular basis rather than the "blitz" on weekends approach which can leave you feeling overwhelmed and maybe dissatisfied with the results.

Q: What has kept you motivated to maintain a garden over the years?

A: I love to eat.   Kind of kidding there, but I really do love going to the yard and bringing in many of the components for supper. Plus, the beauty and creativity of it.
