The Public Works Department is responsible for the maintenance of City-owned infrastructures, parks and fleet. The department also provides solid waste collection and recycling services to single-family residential properties in the City by a workforce that is diverse, committed, motivated and empowered.
These functions are accounted for in seven divisions. They are City Engineer, administration, solid waste management, right-of-way maintenance, Urban Forest, equipment maintenance, and building maintenance.
To support a sustainable environment for our community, the City launches a pilot program for organic recycling or composting.
Collecting leaves reduces potential accidents and injuries caused by slipping on wet leaves and prevents storm drains from clogging and causing street flooding during heavy rains.
Our mission is to provide the highest level of service to the residents of Mount Rainier while maintaining the community’s infrastructure in the most cost-effective manner possible.
Responsible pet owners must pick up after their pets to avoid the harmful effects of pet waste on our health and the environment. The Public Works Department also partners with the County’s Pet Waste Management program by providing pet waste stations around the City.
The City of Mount Rainier Department of Public Works is responsible for clearing streets of snow and ice to promote safe travel for all users. Clearing snow emergency routes and primary roads are prioritized during and after snowfall to allow access for emergency vehicles.
The City of Mount Rainier's Urban Forest Code regulates the actions affecting the urban forest for public and private property trees.
